The crucified Jesus became an agony for me. No, this cannot be my god, I said to myself every time I looked at the crucifix in the chapel. I wanted a god who would show me how to live in this world. Live, and not give up and die a miserable death on a cross.

I was talking to a homeless man at a laundromat recently, and he said when we reduce Christian spirituality to math, we defile the holy. I thought that was very beautiful and comforting. Because I have never been good at math. Many of our attempts to understand christian faith have only cheapened it. I can no more understand the totality of God than a pancake I made for breakfast understands the complexity of me. The little we do understand, that grain of sand our minds are capable of grasping, those ideas, such as “God is good”, “God feels”, “God knows all”, are enough to keep our hearts dwelling on his majesty and otherness forever. This past summer I made the point to catch sunsets...fire in the clouds. I never really wanted to make the trip...but once I got up there, I always loved it...all that beauty happens right above the heads of more than a million people who never notice it. Take heed to the flow of knowledge that comes from the tree of truth. Its roots grow deep within soil that stands not too far from a river of living water.

Father God, I cannot deny the obvious, You & I are one. What you have, I have. You are like air to my lungs, grass to my ground, stars to my moon & water to my fish. You are my spiritual, eternal Father. Always be with me and guide me. Help me to be a man of spirituality and less fleshly. Be my guide like that shadow following the sun as the earth rotates, never abandoning its guiding direction.

Though its leadership fights to keep the doctrine pure, the faith is constantly contaminated, syncretized, revered, and tinkered with by its adherents - and by outsiders like me, who it continues to influence. It's sentimental and businesslike, the faith of superstitious peasants and of brainy postmodern Jesuits. It's undergirded a great deal of radical immigrant and labor activism for generations, but it's also been a reactionary force wielding money and power in support of political bosses.

Common societal thinking in many areas is moving towards a position where people regard God as an outdated fairy-tale with a sinister undertone leading to apathy or resentment towards God. This is far removed from my notion of a living and a loving God who is kind, compassionate and merciful.
