Learn from flowers-always angle towards the sun

I've come to believe in my bones that children - especially children in poverty - are desperate for an education to help them discover a sense of meaning and purpose. Yet, we have decided to narrow our focus to academic achievement, which creates an unhealthy fixation on grades as a sole indicator of self-worth.

KODO SAWAKI: Studying originally meant aspiring to discover the meaning of life. These days studying has become all about getting a job.

I am a worried person with a stressed-out soul, living a simple life with no capital. I am gathering knowledge in every corner I can with the abilities I have. I'm reading philosophy, politics, history and fiction. Greek tragedies and the arctic waste. I'm studying psychology, economics, plant-based nutrition and I'm writing essays and manifestos, chasing bigger names with bigger frames, to ask a question or two, and I am learning to lead. I am reading to take the lead. Lead who? Myself. My own life. My own future. I'm not chasing you, or them, or anyone else; I am chasing me.

Rewiring education ultimately means changing the way we teach the things we want today's students to learn. It should no longer be about distributing content and memorizing meaningless facts, but about teaching kids to combine new understandings of these facts with critical and creative thinking skills that ultimately lead them to discover, understand, and create new things.

It doesn't matter what we cover, it matters what you discover

Faced with the unfamiliar, we the public have been trained to rely on museums, like schools, to serve up art and culture like pieces of pie: little wedges of esthetics, criticism, politics and history.

A single heartbreak teaches you more than what a lifetime of schooling can

The lesson is simple, but it's the results that we aren't going to like.

Education is a huge priority, and that’s just the best.

Speaking is like conducting an orchestra; but instead of music, you are directing emotions. What about ideas I hear you ask? Or intellectual frameworks or structures? They all are directed and communicated by speaking but they all are emotional. Ideas have to be emotional or link to or evoke emotions if they are to be remotely interesting to anyone. And an idea that is appealing is in some way emotionally satisfying.

Teachers should know that the quality of the answers depends significantly on the quality of the questions.

Most of the important things in life I learned online, at work, from experience, or by talking to people. A real education barely costs anything but time and effort and sometimes heartache.

Acquiring certificates without putting the mind at work is completely a waste of education.

Isn’t the point of education to teach students how to think, not what to think?

Education consists primarily in perfecting the art/science of connecting apparently disparate dots.

And, in the end, what will the students have learned? They will, to be sure, have learned something about whales, perhaps about navigation and map reading, most of which they could have learned just as well by other means. Mainly, they will have learned that learning is a form of entertainment or, more precisely, that anything worth learning can take the form of an entertainment, and ought to.

You are not reading this book because a teacher assigned it to you, you are reading it because you have a desire to learn, and wanting to learn is the biggest advantage you can have.
